How To Score a Super Bowl Savings Touchdown

Here’s how to have loads of football fun on Super Bowl Sunday without fumbling your shopping budget.

Forget about pricey mixed drinks, craft beer, and ordering in massive catered trays of deli items. And while you're at it, you don't need pricey team décor to show off your team spirit.

In fact, there's no reason why you can't throw an affordable Super Bowl party. Here's how…

Make it a Team Effort

First off, football is a team sport, so there’s nothing wrong with calling it a potluck in which you ask everyone to bring a finger food appetizer. Or make it a BYOB if you know your crowd is more into enjoying some brews.

Affordable Eats

On the drink side, make sangria with a couple of low cost bottles of wine and some sliced fruit, and make super low-cost jello shots (in team colors) with whatever hard liquor you happen to have on hand. For non-alcoholic beverages, a giant pitcher of iced tea or lemonade, and some water in a glass pitcher will help you save on soda.

To feed a crowd, forget about pricey catering. Try to go with less expensive cuts of meat, and find a recipe that can stretch out well with other ingredients. For example, you could create a taco bar by putting out a package of tortillas, a DIY toppings bar (lettuce, tomato, sour cream, cheese, etc.), cooked up ground beef, grilled chicken strips, a bowl of rice, and a bowl of beans. What’s great is that most of those ingredients are budget-friendly, and it’s “fun” food. You can use the same “bar” concept by making chili in the crockpot, or grilling some sausages and hot dogs, and putting out a variety of toppers (like peppers and onions, relish, sauerkraut, etc).

Save more: Redeem online rewards for a gift card to your favorite take-out restaurants if you want to supplement your recipes with some halftime party food.

Team Spirit Savings

As far as decorations goes, stick to team colors and hit dollar stores and other discount retailers for pennants and banners, rather than buying official NFL gear at sporting goods stores. Better yet, have the crafty kids in the family make up some signs. While you’re at the discount store, you can also pick up paper goods, too – again, in team colors if you can find them.

Save more: If you shop online for party and craft supplies at a participating retailer, you can earn cash back on your purchases–a little extra spending money for your next sports-themed get-together!

Building your menu around sales items, getting creative, and taking advantage of online rewards and perks can help you stretch your Super Bowl party budget, and score some super savings.
